FDA finds more traces of melamine in formulaSeveral samples of infant formula have tested positive for trace amounts of the toxic contaminant melamine or a related compound, the Food and Drug Administration said Thursday. Mead Johnson’s infant powder, Enfamil LIPIL with Iron, also had three positive tests for cyanuric acid, a compound created when melamine breaks down.

FDA Recalls Two Supplements

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued two immediately effective recalls involving potentially dangerous nutritional supplements. The recalls for Starcaps Dietary Supplement Capsules and Zhen De Shou Fat Loss Capsules have been implemented over undeclared, prescription-level ingredients, which classifies them as unapproved drugs.

In China, the U.S. opens food inspection office

Amid recurring Chinese product safety scares, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday opened an inspection office in Beijing that officials said would help China export safer products to America and the world. The new FDA field office, one of three to be opened in China, is the first outside the U.S. and comes during a nadir in U.S. consumer confidence in Chinese-made products after reports of counterfeit drugs, melamine-laced milk and toys covered in potentially lethal lead paint.

Frozen Lean Cuisine chicken dinners recalledNestlé Prepared Foods Company in Springville, Utah is recalling approximately 879,565 pounds of frozen chicken meals that may contain foreign materials, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service said. The objects were identified as small pieces of hard plastic, which were discovered after the company received consumer complaints and a report of one injury.

J&J, Merck recall Mylicon infant anti-gas drops

Johnson & Johnson and Merck & Co said on Monday it is recalling about 12,000 bottles of Mylicon infant anti-gas drops in the dye-free variety because they may contain metal fragments. The companies said they are voluntarily recalling two lots of the over-the-counter medicine as a precaution after determining that some bottles could include metal fragments that were generated during the manufacturing process.

Five Generic Ethex Products Recalled Because of Overdose Risk

Five generic products from Ethex Corp have been recalled because they may contain oversized tablets, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned today in a news release. Patients may receive as much as twice the expected dose of an active ingredient and suffer serious or life-threatening consequences, according to an alert issued by MedWatch, the FDA’s safety information and adverse event reporting program.

U.S. marshals seize tainted blood thinner in OhioFederal authorities said Thursday they have seized some of an Ohio company’s supplies of contaminated blood thinner containing material from China. U.S. marshals, acting at the request of the Food and Drug Administration, seized 11 lots of heparin from Celsus Laboratories Inc. of Cincinnati, the agency said in a news release.
