Pfizer Widens Lipitor Recall Due to Moldy Smell

US drugmaker Pfizer Inc. announced Friday it would recall 38,000 bottles of its blockbuster cholesterol drug Lipitor due to an unpleasant odor, the third recall this year related to the problem. The drugmaker said the latest recall was triggered by two consumer complaints about a musty or moldy odor on Lipitor bottles, which are made by an outside company in Puerto Rico.

Glaxo to Pay $750 Million for Sale of Bad Products

GlaxoSmithKline, the British drug giant, has agreed to pay $750 million to settle criminal and civil complaints that the company for years knowingly sold contaminated baby ointment and an ineffective antidepressant, Paxil — the latest in a growing number of whistle-blower lawsuits that drug makers have settled with multimillion-dollar fines.

Teething Tablet Recall: Full Product List to Keep Baby Safe

Teething is no fun for little kids, but watch out for homeopathic “teething tablets.” The FDA has detected a potentially toxic substance in Hyland’s Teething Tablets and urges consumers to discard them. The substance in question is belladonna, which can cause “serious harm” at high doses, according to the agency, which said it has received reports that some children taking the product experienced symptoms that are consistent with belladonna toxicity.

Weight loss drug pulled from market

Abbott Laboratories has agreed to take its obesity drug Meridia (sibutramine) off the market, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced Friday. The company voluntarily withdrew the drug because clinical trial studies showed there was an increased risk of heart attacks and strokes in people who used the drug. Approximately 8 million people worldwide take the drug, the FDA said, including 100,000 Americans.
