Stryker profits fall due to hip replacement recalls

Device manufacturer Stryker Corporation has reported a 13% decline in profits due to its recent Rejuvenate and ABG II hip replacement recalls. The voluntary Stryker recall has affected the company’s revenue to drop nearly $50 million in the first quarter.

FDA investigated Byetta link to pancreatic cancer

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is investigating the connection between type II diabetes drug Byetta and an increased risk of pancreatic cancer. Byetta is manufactured by Amylin Pharmaceuticals and administered as a twice-daily injection.

Jury hearing arguments in Actos bladder cancer lawsuit

The first Actos bladder cancer lawsuit trial is underway in California, where a jury is hearing arguments from a patient who developed bladder cancer after using the diabetes medication. Jack Cooper took Actos for two years before developing bladder cancer.

Balanced Solutions Compounding Pharmacy recalls sterile drug products

A Florida-based compounding pharmacy is voluntarily recalling all lots of its sterile non-expired drug products sold nationwide over concerns that the products may contain bacteria, federal regulators said Sunday. The Food and Drug Administration asked hospitals and other health-care providers who received sterile products, including all injectables, from Balanced Solutions Compounding Pharmacy, a division of Axium Healthcare Pharmacy of Lake Mary, Fla., to immediately check their medical supplies, quarantine the products and follow the company’s recall instructions.

Fresenius reopening flooded dialysis clinic despite GranuFlo lawsuits

The manufacturer of GranuFlo and NaturaLyte plans to reopen a dialysis clinic flooded by Hurricane Sandy, despite NaturaLyte and GranuFlo lawsuits alleging the company’s products caused severe heart problems and death. Fresenius Medical Care (FMC) operates dozens of dialysis clinics across the United States.

Takeda’s Actos diabetes drug tied to cancer, jury is told

Takeda Pharmaceutical Co. (4502), Asia’s biggest drugmaker, hid the cancer risks of its Actos drug to protect billions in sales, a jury was told in the first of more than 3,000 lawsuits over the diabetes medication to go to trial. Jurors may begin deliberating as early as today over whether Takeda should be held liable for failing to properly warn patients and their doctors that Actos could cause bladder cancer.
