Male sexual enhancement drugs recalled

Midwest Wholesale, a Missouri-based company that distributes over-the-counter male sexual enhancement pills, has issued a voluntary recall of several brands because they contain the same effective ingredients found in prescription-only drugs Viagra and Cialis.

Bellwether BioMet lawsuits likely to take place in 2015

A scheduling order issued by U.S. District Judge Robert Miller revealed that bellwether Biomet hip replacement lawsuits will likely take place in June, August, October and December of 2015. The lawsuits feature common issues that could determine potential results and settlements for other BioMet lawsuits.

Merck issues voluntary recall of cholesterol drug Liptruzet

Merck said it is recalling its combination cholesterol drug Liptruzet, which was introduced in May, because of packaging defects that could reduce effectiveness. In a statement on its website, Whitehouse Station-based Merck said the recall will clear out the entire stock of Liptruzet, which includes all four dose strengths and every batch it has distributed.

Company seeks approval for its 90-second IUD inserter

New Orleans startup company Bioceptive is seeking approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its intrauterine device inserter, “Inserter.” The company claims the gun-shaped device can insert an intrauterine device like the Mirena IUD in as little as 90 seconds.

Doctors unaware of costs associated with faulty hip devices

A survey published in Health Affairs has found that few surgeons know the costs of the devices they are implanting, including devices like the DePuy ASR hip replacement. Of the 503 physicians who took the survey, only 21% were within 20% of the correct price of devices, despite more than 80% saying it is important for surgeons to know what devices cost.

Zoloft side effects similar to other SSRIs

A new study published in the journal Pediatrics revealed that children taking Zoloft and other selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor antidepressants (SSRIs) may face a higher risk of suicidal thoughts. The antidepressants have been found to increase suicide attempts in children proportional to dosage and combining two different antidepressants.

Propecia sexual side effects being studied

A new study on the sexual side effects of Propecia is underway at Baylor College of Medicine. The study of the hair loss drug was announced in August and is titled “Genetic and Epigenetic Studies on Post-Finasteride Syndrome Patients.”
