Judge allows company to sell generic Actos

A U.S. District Judge has allowed a company to begin immediately selling generic Actos, despite resistance from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Watson Pharmaceuticals will begin marketing the generic version of the top-selling type II diabetes drug Actos, which has come under fire for health concerns.

Watson Can Sell Generic Actos Now, U.S. Judge Rules

Watson Pharmaceuticals Inc. may begin immediately marketing a generic version of Takeda (4502) Pharmaceutical Inc.’s diabetes drug Actos, a federal judge ruled, handing the U.S. Food and Drug Administration a defeat. U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson in Washington today overturned an FDA decision that kept Watson from joining a period of shared exclusivity granted to the companies that are first to file for the right to market generic versions of branded drugs.

Consumer Reports has warned readers against using a generic version of Actos recently approved by the Food and Drug Administration. The consumer awareness organization recommends that patients ask their doctors if using the brand-name diabetes drug Actos or its new generic equivalent is necessary, and recommends it only for patients who have no other options.

Already susceptible to bladder cancer, Actos increases risk in diabetes patients

A Canadian study has found that people who suffer from diabetes have a 40 percent higher risk of developing  bladder cancer. Research has solidified that Actos, a popular prescription drug used to treat type 2 diabetes, further increases this risk.

Actos may increase risk of macular edema

Type II diabetes drug Actos may substantially increase the risk of macular edema, according to new research published in the Archives of Internal Medicine. The risk of developing the eye condition was 230% greater up to 10 years after use among patients taking the diabetes medication.
