FDA Issues New Warnings On Zithromax

The US Food and Drug Administration issued a new warning about the antibiotic azithromycin (Zithromax, ZMax, “Z-Pak”, NYSE:PFE, and various generic manufacturers). In today’s “drug safety communication”, the FDA warns of possible fatal heart rhythm problems associated with the drug.

Antibiotic Zithromax Carries Increase Of Heart Death

Pfizer Inc.’s antibiotic Zithromax and its generic competitors carry a “small increase” in the risk of cardiovascular death compared with another common antibiotic, a study found. The pills, which are used to treat infections, caused a “small absolute increase in cardiovascular deaths” among patients, particularly those who had a higher chance of heart problems, according to the study published today in the New England Journal of Medicine.

F.D.A. Warns Johnson on Antibiotic Drug

The Food and Drug Administration warned Johnson & Johnson that it did not properly monitor two human tests of its antibiotic drug candidate ceftobiprole, which is intended to treat complicated skin infections like MRSA. The agency has twice delayed approval of ceftobiprole, citing similar problems. It said Johnson & Johnson violated the protocols of its own study.
