Diabetes Drugs Carry Vision Risks

A popular class of drugs used to treat Type 2 diabetes may increase the risk of vision problems, a new study suggests, underlining the importance of regular eye exams for anyone with diabetes. The study is one of the largest to investigate vision loss associated with thiazolidinediones, a group of drugs that includes the well-known medications Actos and Avandia.

GlaxoSmithKline sued over risks associated with Avandia

A St. Tammany Parish resident has filed a lawsuit against GlaxoSmithKline for its alleged failure to warn about risks associated with the antidiabetic drug Avandia. John Anderson took Avandia to treat his diabetes and states that the drug caused eye hemorrhages and a stroke on Aug. 20, 2011.

Avandia users file lawsuit in Illinois over heart problems

A group of 94 patients who allege they were injured after using the diabetes drug Avandia have filed a lawsuit in Illinois against its manufacturer, GlaxoSmithKline. Barbara Meier and the other plaintiffs in the Avandia lawsuit allege that suffered heart attacks, congestive heart failure or other cardiovascular injuries after using the drug to treat their diabetes symptoms.

Bristol-Myers Diabetes Drug Draws Scrutiny After Avandia, Actos

Bristol-Myers Squibb and AstraZeneca’s new diabetes pill will probably face increased scrutiny from regulators and doctors after two rivals were tied to cancer and heart risks. The drug, dapagliflozin, works differently than Takeda Pharmaceutical’s Actos, linked to cancer last week, and GlaxoSmithKline’s Avandia, tied to heart risks in 2007.

Diabetes drug Avandia to be pulled from retail shelves

The diabetes drug Avandia will be pulled from retail pharmacy shelves in November because it poses such a big heart attack risk, the federal government announced Tuesday. When the new program goes into effect on Nov. 18, only certified doctors will be allowed to prescribe the drug, and only to patients who’ve been informed of the risks and who will fill their prescriptions by mail order through specific pharmacies.

Evidence of Avandia side effects risk grows after new study

A new study published by the British Medical Journal has found that patients taking Avandia are more likely to suffer congestive heart failure, heart attack and other side effects compared to other diabetes drugs. Avandia was recalled by the European Medicines Agency over safety concerns in September 2010, although it is still available for sale in the U.S.

GSK Revises US Avandia Label To Include New Restrictions On Use

GlaxoSmithKline PLC, a pharmaceutical and healthcare company announced Monday it has revised its U.S. prescribing information and medication guides for all rosiglitazone-containing medicines, like Avandia, Avandamet and Avandaryl to include additional safety information and restrictions on the use of these medicines.
