Byetta alternatives may help patients without Byetta cancer risks

Eli Lilly has reported some success in clinical trials with new type II diabetes medication, dulaglutide, which showing decreases risks of diabetes medication side effects. Diabetes drugs such as Amylin Pharmaceuticals Inc.’s Byetta injection have been shown to increase the risks for pancreatitis and cancer.

Byetta probe prompted by doctor’s pancreas study

Both the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA) have launched new investigations into diabetes drug Byetta concerning its link to pancreatic cancer. The reviews were in large part thanks to the independent study work of Doctor Peter Butler, according to the New York Times.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is investigating the connection between type II diabetes drug Byetta and an increased risk of pancreatic cancer. Byetta is manufactured by Amylin Pharmaceuticals and administered as a twice-daily injection.

FDA Warns of Byetta Side Effects Including Pancreatitis

FDA: Merck’s Januvia may have pancreatitis risk

The Food and Drug Administration  said on Friday that there may be a connection between Merck & Co.’s diabetes treatment Januvia and occurrences of acute pancreatitis, the same issue that sunk sales of Amylin Pharmaceuticals Inc.’s Byetta. Still, the agency reaffirms it is unclear whether the connection is between the treatment and pancreatitis or whether diabetes patients in general are at an increased risk. The FDA said there were 88 cases of acute pancreatitis reported in Januvia patients between October of 2006 and February of 2009. The agency is working with Merck to include new warning information on the drug’s label.
