Zimmer takeover of Biomet halted by European Commission

Zimmer Holdings’ planned takeover of hip manufacturer Biomet Inc. has been halted by the European Commission due to lack of information. Zimmer intends to purchase Biomet for more than $13 billion despite the number of Biomet hip replacement lawsuits filed against the company. The takeover of Biomet would make Zimmer the second-largest orthopedic manufacturer behind Johnson & Johnson, which also faces hip replacement lawsuits.

Johnson & Johnson, Yale researchers reach agreement to share clinical data

Medical giant Johnson & Johnson has reached an agreement with Yale University researchers to openly share future research results from the company’s products. Johnson & Johnson manufactures dozens of drugs, hip replacements and transvaginal mesh patches, including the Ethicon and GyneCare ProLift transvaginal mesh patch.

Johnson & Johnson to settle 8,000 DePuy hip replacement lawsuits

Johnson & Johnson announced that it would settle roughly 8,000 DePuy ASR hip replacement lawsuits filed against the company. Lawyers estimated the settlement could exceed $2.5 billion, or about $250,000 per patient.

Johnson & Johnson Lost or Destroyed Transvaginal Mesh Files, Lawyers Contend

Officials of Johnson & Johnson’s Ethicon unit, which made the company’s Gynecare Prolift transvaginal mesh implant, lost or disposed of potentially hundreds of thousands of documents over a decade even though they were ordered by executives to preserve them, attorneys for women who blame the devices for their injuries said in a court filing in West Virginia Dec. 2.

Johnson & Johnson could pay more than $3 B for DePuy hip replacements

Johnson & Johnson may pay as much as $3 billion to patients who received a faulty DePuy ASR hip replacement. The money would pay an average of $300,000 to the more than 11,500 patients who suffered severe complications from the metal-on-metal hip replacement devices.

J.& J. unit phasing out all-metal hip devices

The orthopedic unit of Johnson & Johnson said Thursday that it was phasing out production of all-metal replacement hips, a move reflecting an industry wide trend to abandon the once widely used implants because of high early failure rates.
