In Canada, at least one Mirena uterine perforation per week

Women in Canada reported roughly one uterine perforation per week due to the Mirena intrauterine device (IUD) for 2013. Manufacturer Bayer Pharmaceuticals is now facing several Mirena lawsuits alleging that the device has caused serious injuries after perforating the uterus and migrating to other parts of the body.

Mirena IUD could be cause of potentially fatal sepsis

African health minister introduces new contraceptive alternative to IUDs

African health minister Aaron Motsoaledi has introduced a new contraceptive implant called Implanon to combat pregnancy and give patients an alternative to pills or intrauterine devices (IUDs). Implanon is inserted into the upper arm and lasts for three years, whereas IUDs such as the Mirena IUD are inserted into the uterus through the vagina.

Company seeks approval for its 90-second IUD inserter

New Orleans startup company Bioceptive is seeking approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its intrauterine device inserter, “Inserter.” The company claims the gun-shaped device can insert an intrauterine device like the Mirena IUD in as little as 90 seconds.

IUD contributes to an increased risk of pelvic inflammatory disease

Women who use intrauterine devices (IUD) such as the Mirena IUD are at an increased risk of developing pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), according to the University of Rochester Medical Center. Pelvic inflammatory disease can lead to ongoing pelvic pain, and one in 10 women who develop PID will become infertile.

Bayer acquires another device with history of serious side effects

Bayer Pharmaceuticals, manufacturer of the controversial Mirena intrauterine device (IUD), has acquired another device with a history of serious complications. The Essure system is a contraceptive device featuring two coils inserted into the fallopian tubes, which eventually causes the body to develop enough scar tissue to prevent pregnancy.

Investigation makes available complete list of Mirena IUD complaints

A freedom of information act request has made available more than 59,000 Mirena IUD complaints filed to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Mirena IUD side effects have been a key issue for patients who allege that the intrauterine birth control device is causing severe complications.
