In Canada, at least one Mirena uterine perforation per week

Women in Canada reported roughly one uterine perforation per week due to the Mirena intrauterine device (IUD) for 2013. Manufacturer Bayer Pharmaceuticals is now facing several Mirena lawsuits alleging that the device has caused serious injuries after perforating the uterus and migrating to other parts of the body.

Intrauterine devices could be used in constitutionally questionable procedure

Intrauterine devices (IUD) such as the Mirena IUD could be used in the procedure of sterilizing mentally handicapped women, a practice many lawyers are calling unconstitutional. A 29 year-old girl in California would have been given an IUD for birth control without her consent, had her mother not opted for a different procedure after determining the device was unsafe for the girl.

New Orleans startup company Bioceptive is seeking approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its intrauterine device inserter, “Inserter.” The company claims the gun-shaped device can insert an intrauterine device like the Mirena IUD in as little as 90 seconds.

South Dakota woman files Mirena lawsuit

A South Dakota woman has filed a Mirena IUD side effects lawsuits against Bayer Pharmaceuticals, the device’s manufacturer. Nicole Hemme claims she had to have the birth control device removed in 2010 when it migrated to her pelvis.

IUD contributes to an increased risk of pelvic inflammatory disease

Women who use intrauterine devices (IUD) such as the Mirena IUD are at an increased risk of developing pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), according to the University of Rochester Medical Center. Pelvic inflammatory disease can lead to ongoing pelvic pain, and one in 10 women who develop PID will become infertile.
