Diabetes Drugs Carry Vision Risks

A popular class of drugs used to treat Type 2 diabetes may increase the risk of vision problems, a new study suggests, underlining the importance of regular eye exams for anyone with diabetes. The study is one of the largest to investigate vision loss associated with thiazolidinediones, a group of drugs that includes the well-known medications Actos and Avandia.

Experts weigh Actos alternatives after cancer warning

Two new reports filed by the American College of Physicians and Consumer Reports have found that taking an alternative to the diabetes drug Actos has significant advantages for type II diabetes patients. The physicians found that diabetes medication metformin—which has existed for nearly two decades—is both cheaper and safer than Actos.

FDA denies approval to Actos successor

The Food and Drug Administration has denied approval to the successor of the type II diabetes drug Actos. The agency cited a need for additional data from the drug’s manufacturer, Takeda Pharmaceuticals, amid concerns about the possible side effects of the drug, known as alogliptin.
