Canadian woman questions link between birth control and sister’s death

A Canadian woman is questioning the link between her sister’s sudden death from blood clots and the birth control she was taking. The coroner originally declined to do an autopsy on Rhonda Bergen, but when the family paid for one themselves, the doctor listed the birth control pill Yasmin as a possible contributing factor to her death.

Health Canada reviews more birth control pills linked to blood clots

Health Canada is reviewing the connection between a birth control drug and blood clots after France banned it for causing the deaths of 4 women. The drug, Diane-35, is used to treat acne and is prescribed as an oral contraceptive, but may be responsible for deadly blood clots.

FDA Advisors on Yaz and Yasmin Have Industry Ties

A letter sent by the consumer advocacy group Project On Government Oversight (POGO)is criticizing the industry ties of some of the FDA joint committee members who reviewed the safety of Yaz and Yasmin on December 8, 2011. Because of the industry ties of these members, the joint committee’s conclusion—which amounted to an endorsement of the safety of these oral contraceptives—should be disregarded. A new advisory committee—without questionable impartiality or any conflicts of interest—should re-evaluate the safety of Yaz and Yasmin.

Obama birth control compromise distracts from issue of whether the pill is safe, activists say

President Obama’s recently offered a compromise in the controversy regarding whether religious institutions should be required to offer birth control to employees as part of their health care coverage. Workers at religious institutions, he said, will get free contraception directly from health insurance companies instead of their employer. However, the compromise does not address concerns about the safety of birth control pills such as Yaz and Yasmin, which have been linked to an increased risk of blood clots.

Bayer to include blood clot risks on Yaz and Yasmin packages

Bayer HealthCare said Friday it has added new information about the risks of blood clots to its contraceptive pills Yaz and Yasmin. In cooperation with the Food and Drug Administration, the company said it added new labeling stating that the risks of blood clots with Yaz and Yasmin are similar to those with other oral contraceptives.

YAZ, Yasmin suits filed locally against Bayer

Bayer Corp. was named in at least a half-dozen federal lawsuits filed this week in Pittsburgh alleging the company’s birth control products called YAZ and Yasmin are unsafe and potentially deadly. The complaints are among some 150 nationally so far that target the Robinson-based company over its marketing of the contraceptives, Bayer said. The FDA’s Office of Surveillance and Epidemiology said in late July it had received reports of adverse effects, and even deaths, allegedly related to the use of Yasmin. The FDA said it was conducting studies of the safety of Yasmin and YAZ.

Birth Control Pill Users May Face Increased Health Risks From Taking YAZ or YASMIN
