Popular weight loss drug may cause permanent liver and kidney damage

A study released on December 10 sends out a strongly worded warning about risks of kidney, liver, and other organ damage from the most popular weight drugs on the market. A University of Rhode Island study funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) states that orlistat, which goes by the prescription brand name Xenical and the over-the-counter name Alli, can cause “severe toxicity” to major internal organs.

Regulators and Physicians Raise Alarms About Dangerous Ingredients in Many Herbal Remedies

Nearly two-thirds of American adults take dietary supplements, a broad category that includes vitamins, minerals and herbal products. Most supplements are consumed without raising safety concerns. Still, the products are much less closely scrutinized than drugs. Since last December, the FDA has issued warnings about more than 70 weight-loss supplements that included potentially dangerous ingredients. The ingredients included prescription drugs, and the agency said the side effects could include seizure, heart attack and stroke.

FDA sends out more diet pill alerts; criminal charges possible

The Food and Drug Administration is adding an additional 41 products to an alert about tainted diet pills issued late last month, bringing the total to 69, officials said Wednesday. “I think it’s fair to say that we have a major initiative investigation ongoing into this type of product,” an FDA official said in an interview. “There is definitely the possibility that there could be criminal charges.”

FDA Warns of Risky Weight Loss Pills

The FDA today warned consumers not to buy or use more than 25 products marketed for weight loss because they contain undeclared, active pharmaceutical ingredients that may be risky. Some of the weight loss products that the FDA is warning about claim to be “natural” or to contain only “herbal” ingredients. But FDA tests found that the some of the products contained undeclared ingredients  which far exceeded the FDA-recommended levels, posing a health risk.
