A large number of reported Yaz and Yasmin birth control blood clot victims are teenagers and otherwise healthy young adults, leading parents and teens to be concerned about birth control risks. Girls as young as 14 can be prescribed Yaz and Yasmin.

Woman 24 hours away from heart attack or stroke due to Yaz

A 25-year old woman was told by her doctors that she was 24 to 48 hours away from suffering a major heart attack or stroke due to blood clots formed by her birth control pills. Amanda Saul had been taking Yaz for two years when her doctors told her she had a blood clot close to her heart and one in her lung.

Manufacturer of Yaz and Yasmin buys vitamin company

Bayer Pharmaceuticals, the manufacturer of  Yaz and Yasmin birth control pills, has bought the vitamin company Schiff Nutrition. The acquisition may recoup some costs for Bayer, who has seen net profits drop 18% due to settlement payments made in Yasmin and Yaz lawsuits.

Bayer seeking European approval for more hormonal birth control

Bayer Pharmaceuticals, the drug maker responsible for Yaz and Yasmin, is seeking European approval for a new hormonal birth control patch. The company’s birth control patch would rival Johnson & Johnson’s Ortho Evra patch, a drug which has come under fire for potential increased risks of blood clots.

Bayer’s Yasmin settlements top $400 M

German drugmaker Bayer AG stated it has paid $402.6 million to settle Yasmin lawsuits alleging that the birth control pills caused blood clots. The company claims to have resolved nearly 1,900 birth control lawsuits for an average of $212,000 per case.

Obama birth control compromise distracts from issue of whether the pill is safe, activists say

President Obama’s recently offered a compromise in the controversy regarding whether religious institutions should be required to offer birth control to employees as part of their health care coverage. Workers at religious institutions, he said, will get free contraception directly from health insurance companies instead of their employer. However, the compromise does not address concerns about the safety of birth control pills such as Yaz and Yasmin, which have been linked to an increased risk of blood clots.
